Professor Tao Yang is a senior endocrinologist and diabetes specialist at Jiangsu Province Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, a leading public Grade A tertiary teaching hospital and clinical research center in Jiangsu Province.
He has more than 30 years of clinical and academic experience in endocrinology and metabolic medicine. After graduating in clinical medicine from Nanjing Medical University, he completed advanced postgraduate training and received a doctoral degree in medicine. From 2003 to 2006, he undertook postdoctoral research at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at the University of Colorado in the United States.
Professor Yang specializes in the precision diagnosis and individualized management of diabetes, with particular expertise in pancreatic islet β-cell function, type 1 diabetes, autoimmune diabetes, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, and the differential diagnosis of complex diabetes subtypes. His clinical practice also includes type 2 diabetes, obesity, thyroid disease, and other endocrine and metabolic disorders.
His research focuses on pancreatic islet dysfunction and autoimmune injury to insulin-producing β cells. He and his research team developed a multidimensional approach to pancreatic islet function assessment, evaluating basal secretion, post-load peak response, and the speed of the secretory response. This work is intended to support more accurate diabetes-risk assessment, disease classification, and individualized clinical management.
Professor Yang has also contributed to research on the immune and genetic mechanisms of type 1 diabetes, diabetes-related autoantigens, monogenic diabetes, and precision classification strategies. His work integrates basic research, clinical investigation, and the development of practical diagnostic and assessment tools.
