Revascularization

Restoring blood flow to the foot — by endovascular or open surgical means — so wounds have the circulation they need to heal.

Revascularization

Revascularization aims to restore arterial inflow to the foot so that a diabetic foot ulcer has the blood supply it needs to heal. It is often the first step in an advanced case where poor circulation is limiting recovery.

How it works

  • Vascular imaging identifies where flow is blocked or narrowed
  • Endovascular techniques (angioplasty, sometimes stenting) reopen tibial or pedal vessels
  • Open bypass is considered in selected cases when endovascular options are not suitable

Recovery

After inflow is restored, wound care and offloading continue, with monitoring to confirm the foot is receiving improved circulation.
